On all Canon SD-card only cameras, 1080p RAW for an extended period of time (>30 s) is not possible (except those with the new DIGIC 6 processor, which hasn't yet been hacked I believe). Magic Lantern is great on all cameras because it increases the bitrate and gives shooting assists. The workflow trade-offs might have once made sense, but now I'm not so sure.) (Magic Lantern always struck me as slightly masochistic. If you need 60p, then the Video Assist is $495.Īnd with those last two, you'd be getting shooting assists like focus peaking, etc. The Ninja 2 and Ninja Star, while limited to 30p, are both under $300, and you'd be recording in ProRes, which should give you all the post-flexibility you need.

Why not just plug your Nikon into an external recorder? I guess I'll just have to stay in the dark outer recesses of the world of amateurs whose work will never be seen by anyone other than himself and the 3 people who stumble upon my videos. Not only hard drive space but my computer itself chokes on h264. Yeah, the more I look into it the more I realize it's not just getting a camera that can shoot RAW. If you shoot RAW video, you're going to need a lot of extra TB's of storage/more $. I thought to suggest it as you stated budget constraints.

Plus I'm trying to keep my cost below $325.00. Yeah, I know about the G7 but it kills me that I could have gotten it from B&H for $579 with a free, high quality lens AND a Rode mic but passed on it last November or so. Could you elaborate further?Īlthough it doesn't shoot RAW video, a camera like the Panasonic G7 is made with video in mind, doesn't require any hacks and shoots 4K 100 mbps.

Thanks.ĮDIT: I just googled whether you can shoot RAW or not and there are countless links saying you can. If that's the case you've made up my mind for me. I thought ML gives that ability going all the way back to the T2i. You will need a 5DIII to shoot HD in raw using the ML hack. The T4i does not shoot raw video at 1920x1080. For example, you can't adjust blues, or reds, etc., without affecting the entire image.Īnyway, my question is, is there that much difference between Nikon's h264 and a Canon video file shot in RAW format using magic lantern? Is the difference big enough to warrant purchasing a T4i? I can afford one (on ebay they go for $350 to $500 and up) but it is a bit of a bite in my finances if the difference is minimal. While the video out of the D5500 is very good, I really can't do much post processing on its h264 files. I know that all of the reviews say it's much better than a Canon T4i (no flame wars, please) but all of the advantages have to do with photography and I shoot almost exclusively video.
